Walk Around Luang Prabang
By Andrew Forbes
Main Street, Luang Prabang
Look out: A view of Luang Prabang

Situated on a tree-covered peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers and encircled by forested mountains, Luang Prabang is undeniably Laos's most historic and attractive city, with many fine temples and a former royal palace to visit. The shady tree-lined lanes are crowded with historic temples and French colonial buildings, and the small, ethnically diverse population is both traditional and friendly. Traffic is exceptionally light, so a day spent walking and exploring the town's tremendous cultural heritage and soaking up the peaceful atmosphere is among the most rewarding experiences Laos has to offer. The combination of regal heritage, fine architecture, and the splendors of nature make Luang Prabang one of the most intriguing and magical cities in Asia.
