Thai culture perhaps reaches its pinnacle with its dining, and unlike other food-focused cultures (the French, say), Thais don't feel a need to gouge the pocketbook to point out how good their food tastes. Le Grand Lanna is the perfect example of this.

Located just outside of Chiang Mai on a raised wooden pavilion surrounded by lush foliage and fountains, the quiet setting is accentuated by misting fans and candlelight. Traditional music and artwork from throughout the northern region add to the serene ambience.

Then of course there is the food. A selection of delicious curries arrive at your table served in traditional pottery. Highlights on the menu include deep-fried prawn rolls with plum sauce and yom somo, a spicy pomelo (fruit that is similar to grapefruit) salad with roasted red onion and peanuts. Expect to be thoroughly stuffed for less than $6 per dish, and don't forget to save room for the homemade ice cream.

Le Grand Lanna takes major credit cards and is open from 11:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. Reservations are advised. Also, note they are equipped to take parties of ten to 30 people in private rooms if you have a crowd that want to eat like kings. The restaurant is part of the Mandarin Oriental's Dhara Dhevi resort in Chiang Mai.
