Cross-Country the Engadine
By Mark Honan

Cross-country skiing may not give you the pure adrenaline rush of downhill skiing, but it's no less rewarding. You still need good technique to avoid falling over on slippery slopes, and if you do take a tumble, who cares? Just brush yourself off and resume the trail. One of the best cross-country courses is the one used by the Engadine Ski Marathon every March. It starts at Maloja, sweeps round St. Moritz Lake, cuts through swathes of pine trees, and continues eastward to beyond charming little Zuoz—a distance of some 26 miles. If you're the kind who tries to beat the clock, the elite professionals can slide through this trail in about one hour, 20 minutes. Or take your time: This is a fairly flat trail, though there are some gentle ups and downs.
