Top Ten Train Rides

By Elyse Green
Arctic Circle, Sweden & Norway

The fjords of Norway
(Jorgen Wouters)

Leave it to the Scandinavians to engineer one of the world's greatest railway experiences—in the frigid north of the Arctic Circle. The route (by public train) from Stockholm to Kiruna will put you more than 100 miles above the Arctic Circle and take you past all that makes this area famous. You'll climb nearly 3,000 feet into the fjords and mountains of southern Norway, then slowly descend the same distance into a fjord on the other side of the summit. Along the way, you'll also see the fjords of Aurland, Naeroy, and renowned Sognefjord, which is the longest in the world (at 126 miles), and one of the deepest (at a must-see-to-believe 4,000 feet).
