Balloon Over Southern Sweden
By Bertil Lintner
Ballooning has become popular in Sweden of late. Head to the province of Smeland—one of the more popular spots for the sport—and you'll see why. Although located in the densely populated south, Smeland is thickly forested and rocky, with an abundance of lakes and rivers. Start in the town of Jvnkvping (several companies offer day trips) at the southern tip of Vdttern, Sweden's second-biggest lake, and drift over the province that was once so poor that it provided the United States with the majority of its Swedish immigrants. Today, trim and prosperous towns and villages dot the Smeland landscape as you fly over in a hotair balloon. Bring your own lunch and warm jackets to fight the cool Swedish air.
