Snowshoe Buying EssentialsWhat to Wear
By Larry Olmsted
When studying the weight ratings on snowshoes, don't forget the extraweight you will be carrying in the winter. Most people weigh themselveswhile naked on a bathroom scale, but only a fool would go snowshoeing au naturel. Forget about vanityfor a good estimate you'll need to consider not only your true weight, hut the weight of your clothing and other gear as well. Depending on where you are going and how long you'll be there, you might end up carrying quite a heavy load. For example: Short Golf Course Outing (Basic Gear) Boots Day Hike Basic gear (above) Overnight Excursion Basic gear (above) The best way to pick the right snowshoe is to try before you buy. Most snowshoe events, such as races or festivals, offer demonstration pairs. Many Nordic ski areas now rent snowshoes and offer lessons, as well. There are also sporting goods stores (includingmajor outdoor recreation chains like EMS and REI) that rent snowshoes. These retailers can be found in most winter resort towns, and some even have programs where the rental fees can be applied toward your eventual purchase. (Some shops go so far as to offer a satisfaction guarantee that allows you to exchange your purchase for credit toward another pair of snowshoes within a certain period of time if you are dissatisfied.)
