If the thought of being underwater leaves you cold, but you still want to experience more of Thailand than just sitting on the beach, kayaking is the best way to explore the country's stunning coastal reaches.

John Gray's Sea Canoe was one of Thailand's first "eco" tour operators, and prides itself on offering kayak exploration with an environmental and cultural bent. Founded in 1989 after John Gray traveled through Southern Thailand with friends in search of the legendary giant limestone cliffs, the area proved to be even more promising than he imagined. The giant rock formations also harbored lagoons and caves that could easily be explored with the right vessel, namely maneuverable and easy-to-paddle sea kayaks.

Today John Gray's tours travel out of Phuket and the Krabi area for both day-long and multi-day expeditions. Gray, known as Ling Yai (Big Monkey) to his staff, celebrates the fact that these tours are a way for visitors to experience an unseen slice of Thailand.
