Kayaking from Manhattan out to the Statue of Liberty is one of the greatest ways to enjoy the Big Apple. For a little-known program to get you out there, visit the Downtown Boathouse in Manhattan (www.downtownboathouse.org), which provides free access to the Hudson River and offers loaner kayaks and instruction to anyone who wants to paddle the New York Harbor. There are two put-in sites: Pier 26 between Canal and Chambers Streets in Tribeca and Pier 64 at 24th Street in Chelsea. These facilities are open during the day on weekends and on some weeknights. Head to Pier 26 by 8 a.m. on the weekends, and join the lottery to kayak out to the Statue of Liberty.
