Even those without a hankerin' for big-mountain landscapes and storybook villages can't help but appreciate the terrain covered by Switzerland's Glacier Express. The train takes you through the heart of the southern Swiss Alps, from St. Moritz to Zermatt along a path lined with razor-sharp, perennially snow-capped peaks, vast Alpine meadows, and cuckoo-clock-like chalets.
The journey takes more than seven hours, but there's no rush. Stop in the medieval town of Chur and in the surrounded-by-mountains town of Andermatt. Go any time of year. The Swiss countryside is a snowy wonderland in winter, a palette of alpine flowers in spring, and cool under a mild summer sun. See www.fo-bahn.ch/glaciere.html.
