Top Ten New York AdventuresRaft North Country Whitewater
By Gary Fallesen
If it is Class V whitewater you're after, you can certainly find it in New York on the upper section of the Moose River in Old Forge. To go after something a little tamer, run the Black River Canyon from Watertown to Lake Ontario. This is seven miles of wild and warm water that rocks in the dead of summer because of reservoir releases, and its one of the finest Class IV stretches in the Northeast. Dam releases also make the Salmon River in Pulaski a summertime hot spot. The Ausable around Ausable Chasm is another destination for Class IV sections, while the Hudson River Gorge in North Creek offers Class III rapids.
