Raft the Rhine's Whitewater
By Mark Honan

Our raft rides a wave, then crashes down into a space where the water level dips. Plumes of water rear up on either side, lashing heavy spray across us and into our squinting faces. We dig into the river with our paddles with renewed vigor, attempting with only limited success to control the helter-skelter motion of our craft.
This is all part of the fun of a whitewater ride on the Rhine. Though you'll find it a crowded trip, your river companions will be mostly locals. River rafting (Class III to IV) is best on the 10.5-mile stretch of the Rhine between Ilanz and Reichenau, in Canton Graubünden in eastern Switzerland.
