In the wake of Lewis and Clark

Lewis and Clark camped here, and muchas gracias are due their modern-day fans for working to open up its waterfront to paddlers. The Columbia River water trail is a "blueway" connected to a greenway that links the city of Portland with the Pacific Coast. The focus of this trail is the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805. Work is proceeding full steam ahead to have the trail ready for the Expedition's bicentennial celebration, scheduled for 2003 to 2006. All of the Lewis and Clark expedition's campsites will be identified, along with information culled from their journals on the location of Indian villages along the river. Of course, if whitewater is more your speed, some of the West's most excellent wild rivers are just a couple hour's drive away.
