They say every river runs to the sea. Actually, some don't - but the point is well taken. Traditionally rivers have been the connectors between the richness of the earth and the world of trade. In fact, many river goddesses are said to embody wealth. But all too frequently access to rivers for the people who live in the cities has been made difficult by a wall of commercial activity: docks, warehouses, train tracks and busy roads.
