Cuzco: Run the Sacred Rapids
By Rob Rachowiecki
Combine sport and history: Rent a kayak in Cuzco and enjoy scenic runs on the Urumbaba River, which the Incas knew as the Sacred Valley. Don't expect a ton of outfitters: Pioneered by Polish expeditions to Colca Canyon just 20 years ago, kayaking is still a relatively new sport in Peru. If you're highly experienced, you may be able to finesse a free trip as a safety kayaker on some of the more difficult multi-day rafting trips, but for a casual paddle, opt for a day on the Urumbaba. The place to rent? Eric Adventures, owned by Eric Arenas; he was the Peruvian kayaking representative in the 1992 Olympics.
