Pennsylvania's fall festival of color also dazzles when seen from a car or RV, and the state has no shortage of gently winding roads that pass through densely-forested mountains.
The longest of the state's scenic drives crosses the entire northern part of the state, running for 400 miles through small towns and state forests, climbing over hills and dipping into valleys. The Grand Army Highway, or Route 6, begins in Milford, near the Delaware Water Gap, and stretches west to Cherry Hill on Lake Erie. The finest time for leaf-peeping along this route is during the first two weeks of October.
The beauty of the fall foliage interspersed with bucolic farmland makes a scenic drive through southwestern Pennsylvania's Amish and Dutch Country a treat. You'll likely share the road with Amish buggies as you cruise along the 40 miles of Route 772 miles between Gap and Manheim.
The central part of the state is home to some of Pennsylvania's most beautiful old-growth forests, and Routes 104 and 35 traverse some of the most scenic and dense woodlands. The 32-mile drive from Mifflinberg to Mount Pleasant Mills, then on to McAlisterville, is an excellent way to enjoy the unique scenic opportunities that only come around once a year.
