Cumberland by Canoe

Buck Creek

Buck Creek is a small, scenic, Class II, whitewater stream that drains the eastern half of Pulaski County. Runnable from KY 461 to Lake Cumberland following periods of heavy rain, the stream winds through forested hillsides with some exposed rock visible, especially in the lower sections below KY 80. Several small caves along the run provide the opportunity for interesting side trips.

The level of difficulty is easy Class II with most rapids consisting of very small ledges or small standing waves. Route selection is obvious and no scouting is required. Deadfalls constitute the primary hazard to navigation. The average stream width is 35 to 45 feet. Access is good. Water levels on Buck Creek are usually optimal when surrounding larger streams (the Rockcastle River and the North Fork of the Cumberland River) are high or marginally flooded.
