It's one of Rajasthan's most popular activities: Riding a camel into the Thar Desert from Jaisalmer is a can't-miss opportunity. As your camel winds its way sedately through the sand dunes, you're treated to an vivid array of sights: small golden fields of millet shimmering in the sun, shepherd boys tending flocks of goats, young girls picking berries, and picturesque ruined villages gradually returning to the desert. You'll spend the cool evenings huddled around a small campfire with a blanket of stars overhead, the silence broken only by the low murmur of your camel drivers. Safaris head out daily from Jaisalmer, and you'll need to pin down the operator for details on what is provided.
