Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1984 and located on the mainland of eastern North Carolina, contains over 152,000 acres. The Refuge was established to protect unique forested wetland communities and associated wildlife.
This refuge is the largest in the Albemarle/Pamlico region. Endangered species receive primary consideration in refuge activities. Some inhabitants include alligators, bald eagles, and red-cockaded woodpeckers.
