Birdwatch in Koshi Tappu

Nepal has several lowland national parks, most of which are best known for their charismatic macro-fauna—tigers and rhinos and bears, oh my. Koshi Tappu, however, is different. Consisting primarily of a vast wetland and reservoir, it's one of the best birdwatching spots in the country. The reserve is also home to one of Nepal's last herds of wild water buffalo. The waters here are also home to endangered Gangetic dolphins and two species of crocodiles (including man-eating marsh muggers). October through March are the best birding months here, and during these months more than 400 species can be seen within the park. Waterfowl are most abundant during February and March. The best way to explore the reserve is on a boat tour arranged through one of the nearby lodges.
