The Travel Bug: Nature Versus Nurture

Little By Little

The first step might be a trip to Canada, a trip that requires crossing a border, passing through customs, and exchanging one currency for another. Unless we fly, we don't even need a passport. Except in Quebec, there's no language issue.

South of the Border
After Canada we're ready for a slightly bigger step, perhaps a family trip on one of those package deals to Acapulco, Mexico. Although the food is generally familiar, English is not the mother tongue. Still, we'll get along fine because Mexico is a culture accustomed to visitors. Kids quickly learn that the so-called language barrier is made of papier-mbchi. As a bonus, we can practice the worldwide sport of bargaining.
