Nomadic Morocco

Make Your Own Adventure
By Ken Kristensen

Camel Safari:
Camel treks, lasting anywhere from one day to several weeks, are the best way to see the Sahara's most impressive dunes. The best dunes are near Mhamid, south of Ouarzazate.

Driving:
Most major U.S. rental agencies have offices in Casablanca and Marrakech. Make sure you get a new car with a spare tire as repair shops are few and far between. Good road maps are available at most newsstands. Roads are well-paved, and speed limits are liberal. Traffic is sparse outside the major cities.

Skiing/Snowboarding:
The best place for snow adventure is Mischiffen Resort near Ifrane, in the Middle Atlas just south of Fis, and the skiing center of Oukaimeden, south of Marrakech in the High Atlas. Both have lifts and good slopes, as well as equipment for hire and instruction. Season: end of November to early April. Contact the Mountain Information Center of Ministry of Tourism, 1 rue Oujda, Rabat: 011-212-7-70-12-80 or The Royal Moroccan Federation of Skiing and Moutaineering, Parc de la Ligue Arabe, BP 15899, Casablanca: 011-212-2-20-37-89, fax: 011-212-2-47-49-79.

Surfing:
The Atlantic breakers, the propitious winds of the Mediterranean, and huge lakes make Morocco an African surfing and windsurfing Mecca. Essaouira, near Agadir, and Dar Bouazza, near Casablanca, are the best spots. Contact the Royal Moroccan Surfing Federation: 011-212-2-25-95-30, fax: 011-212-2-23-63-85.

Rafting:
When there is rain, which isn't often, the rivers swell dramatically and can be extremely rough. Guides can be hired regionally or through travel agencies in the major cities. Try the gorges of Tazart, Taghia, and Tafraoute, or go through the western canyons of Jorro and Tassaout. In the Middle Atlas, the 90-mile descents on the Ahansal and Melloul rivers are remarkable.
