Henry Coe State Park: Bay Area

Henry Cole State Park
Pure bucolic indulgence (Will Hagen)

Henry Coe State Park is a singletrack gem only 30 minutes from San Jose. Fortunately for us it's basically overlooked by the herds of voracious weekend warriors. Hard to tell why since it sports about 30 miles of singletrack scribbling across its many steep ridges.

To locate Henry's, take Route 101 to Gilroy and exit on Leavesley Road, heading east for about a mile. Turn left on New Avenue, right on Roop Road, and then follow the signs. Secreted away in a rocky, live-oak valley, Coe is pure bucolic indulgence.

The best singletracks start from the Coyote Creek parking area and wind up Jackson Ridge to gemlike Kelly Lake. After more singletrack along Pacheco Ridge, you'll come to remote Mississippi Lake. Rumor has it that there's some eight-pound lunker bass hiding in there. Got room in your fanny pack for a fishing pole?

Warning: Take lots of water—the summer sun will braise your frontal lobes like tri-tip on the barbie!
