In the spring, ranchers in Montana and Wyoming move cattle from low pasture to high. This is the time to experience the real deal, not the tourist shows of the summer. During the three or four days of a drive, some outfits drive back to the ranch house every night for dinner and sleep. Others rough it, sleeping in tents and preparing meals out of a chuck wagon. During the day you can help with the cow punching, or you can just ride along, enjoying the wide-open country, the moody skies, the wildlife, and the pleasure of riding a lively, working ranch horse. Weather is volatile this time of year, so come prepared for anything, from warm sunny days to late snow.

Frank Robbins of High Island Ranch in Wyoming explains what folks enjoy about cattle drives: "People just fall in love with the beautiful country, the wide-open spaces. And they enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie, making good friends with people from all over the world."
