Bike the Highway to Heaven

Surrounded by pine, oak, and mountains: There's a reason the route from San Cristobal to Palenque has been dubbed the "highway to heaven." But it's not the only biking game in town. San Cristobal de las Casas makes for a great place to base yourself as you explore the central Chiapas mountain range. For day trips, you can't do better than the 333-acre Huitepec Ecological Reserve, just a couple miles from town on the road to Chamula. The reserve is up on the Muktevitz Volcano, one of the highest peaks in this mountain range (2,700 meters). Take the interpretive trail through the pine and oak forest and keep an eye out for some of the 60 local species of birds and 40 migratory species that nest here during the winter.
