Lord Howe Island

The Lord Howe island group is a unique nature vacation spot. Among its permanent inhabitants are 280 humans, 219 species of native plants, and the world's most southerly coral reefs. The islands have huge, important colonies of nesting seabirds, including the rare providence petrel. The endangered Lord Howe Island woodhen is one of the world's rarest bird species. In all, 129 individual bird species inhabit the islands.

The island group has unusual landforms and varying ecosystems that support many rare and endangered plant species. Vegetation ranges from mist forests on volcanic summits, to wooded hills, palm groves, swamps, and grassy areas. Visitors often describe Lord Howe Island as paradise on earth. And the residents aim to keep it that way! They have limited the number of tourist beds to 400, and all buildings are low-rise. Vehicles are limited to one per family, with only a handful for hire. Cycling is the most enjoyable and scenic way to get around the island.

Visitors can travel to Lord Howe independently, or buy one of a range of inclusive packages.
