Biking in the streets of Minho

Many people overlook Portugal, particularly if it's their first trip to Europe. Big mistake. Portugal has all of the historical and scenic charm of any European country, and it offers a great value besides. So choose a meandering route that shows off Portugal's immense variety. You'll encounter sea coast cliffs, rolling farmland, rugged mountains, green forests in the north, Mediterranean scrub in the south. And much more. Recommended areas include the coast south of Lisbon to the Cabo de Sao Vicente. (Think twice about venturing farther into the Algarve, the southern coast. It tends to be crowded and touristy.)

Sagares, the coast between Lisbon and Porto, is even more off the beaten track. Rugged Minho in the northwest part of the country has a cooler climate and a surprising Celtic flavor. Whatever area you choose to explore, definitely take in the coast, but also venture inland. Better still, many of the important roads have been repaved, the perfect excuse to travel with your road bike.
