Truckee
Truckee is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line. This used to be Sin City, and while now the town's character could be more aptly described as laid back, the place still has a lot of personality. Donner Lake is within the town limits and Donner Pass lies just to the west. The ski resorts of Boreal, Sugar Bowl, and Donner Ski Ranch are convenient. Interstate 80, the major east-west trans-Sierra"all-weather" highway, passes through the town on its way between California and Nevada. Tahoe City, which is down the road, is a compact town to shop for gear.

Incline Village
Incline Village is on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Tourism is the operative word in town with the area's stores, restaurants and roads packed with people during the peak summer months. People come here to ski, hike, bike. And the town has the lodging, restaurant, stores, and outfitters to keep 'em happy. The neighboring community of Crystal Bay is a more upscale outpost for those who want to bump their lakeside sojourn up a notch.

South Lake Tahoe
Appropriately named, South Lake Tahoe anchors the southern end the lake. As the largest town on the lake, South Lake Tahoe is a bustling center for lodging, restaurants, and stores as well as museums and cultural events. The town has an excellent parks and recreation program, so there's much to do beyond the run-of-the-mill resort town.
