Ski Trek the Haute Route
By Mark Honan
It's one of the most famous winter ski-touring routes in the world. So how do you tackle it? Climb up a mountain, strap on a pair of skis, start walking, and keep going for five days! That's the challenge that awaits when you take on the Haute Route in Valais, in southern Switzerland. The trip is high-adrenaline, high-endurance, and just plain high—you'll hit altitudes of nearly 12,500 feet and enjoy close encounters with 10 of the 12 highest peaks in Switzerland. The route runs between two lively Alpine resorts (both with excellent downhill skiing): Verbier and Zermatt.
