Bet on the Crabs

While you can spend your days enjoying exciting outdoor activity, what can you do once night has fallen? Have a nice dinner, enjoy a few drinks, and then check out the crab racing.

First, place your bet (usually a buck or two) on a likely horseshoe crab—one with long legs, a sprinter's reflexes, or perhaps the best-looking shell; your crustacean will be marked with chalk for mid-race reference. Once the betting is closed, the crabs are set loose to skitter about on the restaurant floor, hopefully moving in the general direction of the finish line.

Even those without any money riding on a crab tend to get caught up in the action, crouching at crab-level to exhort their favorite, or hopping up and down while shouting their crab's nickname. Whatever method you choose, remember that a glass of rum punch (emphasis here on the rum) is an essential part of the crab-racing experience.

During crab-racing season, head for the Flamboyant Hotel (473-444-4247; www.flamboyant.com), located near Grand Anse, any Monday night after 9pm.
