Fly Fishing the Texas Coast

Espiritu Santo Bay: North Shoreline

Located east of Port O'Connor near a cut that connects the Intracoastal Waterway with Espiritu Santo Bay is Dewberry Island. It is situated between the Lagoon and Espiritu Santo Bay and frequently draws redfish, trout, and flounder to its shorelines. During periods of spring tides, the small tidal lakes on Dewberry Island frequently pull reds off the deeper bay systems.

The nearby Intracoastal Waterway has stretches of grass that have been washed out around the edges by barge traffic, creating small cuts and drop-offs that also hold redfish, trout, and flounder. Work bendbacks and Clouser Deep Minnows around these holes. Dewberry Island is accessible by boat from the launch ramp at Charlie's Bait Camp and from marinas and launch ramps at Port O'Connor. Charlie's Bait Camp is located off Texas 185 east of Seadrift. Continue east on 185 for 6 miles. Turn right on Lane Road and proceed 4.5 miles. Charlie's Bait Camp is at the end of the road, on the Intracoastal Waterway.

On the north side of Dewberry Island is the Lagoon, a small estuary that includes a feature called the Berma large, bare sandbar about 50 yards wide and 400 yards long that lies a few inches under water. Under normal conditions, you cannot run a boat over this shallow bar, but it provides excellent sightcasting options for flyfishers wading on its hard sand bottom. The Lagoon is located along the Intracoastal Waterway between the Army Cut and Shoalwater Bay and is accessible from the launch ramp at Charlie's Bait Camp and from the marinas and the launch ramps at .Port"O'Connor.

Charlie's Bait Camp, on the mainland side of the Intracoastal Waterway, also provides access by flats boat or kayak to the nearby flats of Shoalwater Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay and of the Lagoon. These areas offer a wealth of wadefishing and sightcasting options.

Another prime area for wade- and driftfishing is nearby Long Island, which runs along the Intracoastal Waterway east of Dewberry Island. It is located between Espiritu Santo Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway and can be accessed by johnboat or kayak from Charlie's Bait Camp. Several cuts that empty into Shoalwater Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay along the shore of Long Island draw trout and redfish.
