Where the Fish Roar: Hunting Zimbabwe's TigerfishCreature Feature
By Bob Newman
Tarzan wasn't kidding when he told Jane that it's a jungle out there. Well, okay, so there's no jungle in this part of Africa (Zimbabwe and Botswana), but what there is is in an eclectic variety of terrain and vegetation that is home to more species and numbers of animals than your wildest dreams. Yes, elephants, zebras, elands, lions, Cape buffalo, sable, giraffes, gazelles, staggering numbers of birds, crocodiles, hippos, leopards, and countless other creatures are all right there in front of you, beside you, and behind you. Sometimes you have to watch your back cast in order to avoid snagging some hapless animal. The size and clarity of the sky, absolute wildness of the place, mind-numbing animals, and sounds of the night propel you into a surreal world that only a tiny percentage of people ever get to experience. Your camera will likely die of overuse. If it's the last thing you do, get yourself and your fly rods to the Zambezi River, Lake Kariba, and the Okavango Delta. You'll thank me later.
