Go downhilling at the birthplace of Alpine skiing: It all started at Davos, in Graubünden Canton in eastern Switzerland, in 1883. You can't beat the appeal of fresh powder swishing under your skis as you push off down a high-octane ski slope. Skiers still come here in great numbers, attracted by one of the finest ski areas in the Alps. In conjunction with nearby Klosters, Davos provides a ski area covering almost 200 miles. The Weissfluh-Kublis ski run is an exhilarating descent of 6,562 feet over a distance of about seven and a half miles. And if you're a snowboarder, Davos is a must (it's one of the few Swiss resorts to actively promote snowboarding). Scores of hip, young snowboarders congregate at the Jakobshorn ski area.
