What's Bolivia about?
Isolation for one. Without airtravel, it would be almost inaccessible. Not only is it landlocked, it's one of the most roadless countries in the Americas. The terrain ranges from the wall-like Andes to dense Amazonian rainforest.
Cultural distinction. Bolivia also has the highest indigenous population in the Americas, giving practically every aspect of its' culture a distinctly Indian flavor. Only 60 to 70% of its people speak Spanish, frequently only as a second language. In some regions, you'd be much better off speaking the indigenous Quechua or Aymara languages.
And adventure! Inca trails, jungle tours, bird watching, ancient music, craftwork, fishing, mountain climbing, sailing on Lake Titicaca, exploring tropical valleys, Spanish colonial cities, archeological ruins, indigenous cultures. . . You won't be bored.
GORP has pulled together the basics on Bolivia articles on this remote, thrilling country. Let's start with some of the places. . .
