Boulder, a well-spring of exercise-obsessed residents and miles of cycling and walking trails, is clearly a paragon of the eco-minded lifestyle. But the city also boasts its own rich history and a thriving arts community and restaurant scene. For a unique eatery, there's Dushanbe Teahouse, a fairytale extravaganza of a building crafted by Tajikistan artisans; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Boulder Creek Path, and Pearl Street Mall are a stroll away. At historic Chautauqua Park & Auditorium, residents and visitors listen to world-class performers and speakers, hike trails, and eat in the popular dining hall. Chautauqua also rents cottages. Love science? National Center for Atmospheric Research has hands-on exhibits (free) and cool science stuff in the onsite store. Best tour (also free): Watch tea being made and packaged at Celestial Seasonings. Go when production lines run; there's a great gift shop and restaurant, too. Boulder is also home to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, one of the top three such festivals in the nation. Eclectic lodging choices include the historic Hotel Boulderado (Teddy Roosevelt slept here), elegant St. Julien, and moderate Quality Inn & Suites Boulder Creek.
