Top Ten Southern Africa Classic Adventures

The Okavango Delta from the Saddle
Giraffes of the Okavango
 (Corel)

After horseback riding in southern Africa, riding anywhere else may seem a letdown. After all, you get to ride among vast herds of zebra and wildebeest, close enough to reach out and touch hide and horn. You need to be an experienced horseman (or woman) to do it—experienced enough, anyway, to gallop out of trouble if necessary, swim the horse across lagoons, and stay in the saddle if your mount shies suddenly. After all, it's likely you'll encounter animals you won't want to reach out and touch-lion, wild dog, and hyena. And riding in Botswana's Okavango makes the experience even more memorable. The Okavango's a river delta that feeds not into the sea but into dry land. Every winter, this creates a vast inland lagoon broken up by islands of rising ground, all stuffed with wildlife.
