Shred it up at Sugarbush. Once known as "Mascara Mountain" for the bevy of beauties it once attracted—think Kennedys—Sugarbush is now known more for spectacularly steep trails and classic meandering cross country trails.

Push powder at Stowe. Skiing at this resort takes place on two mountains: Mt. Mansfield, the highest in Vermont, and Spruce Peak. Narrow and often steep trails continue to be Stowe's strength.

Or hit Stowe backcountry. Lest you should think that Vermont's snowbound offerings should be limited to downhill skiing. One of the northeast's cross-country gems rests in this famed resort.

Board Stratton, the birthplace of the single-boarded sport, and a spot still popular among the trend-setting snowsports fans. You'll find spacious runs, plenty of intermediate-friendly pitches and multiple "terrain gardens" designed for kids and beginners.

For a throwback to simpler, and quieter times, head to northeastern Vermont's Burke Mountain, where a modest resort of four lifts and 31 downhill trails and 60 miles of cross-country trails serves a small but eager crowd.
