South African impalas are wary creatures |
Two factors will weigh heavily on your wildlife-watching experience: weather and expectations. Weather, you can't do much about, except pack high-quality, breathable raingear (pleaseno vinyl ponchos!) and have a good attitude. But realistic expectations are totally up to you. Ask your outfitter how likely it is that you'll be able to howl up red wolves or find that band of orangutans. Rare creatures in their natural habitats don't always show up on schedule.
Another word of wisdom: Start local. Join a local conservation group and try out a few of their field trips in your home state. Then, when you find yourself in the middle of the Serengeti, you'll already know how to focus those binoculars.
