Directions: Islands in the lower Columbia River in Oregon. Accessible only by boat. Some of the islands are visible from U.S. Highway 30, five miles E of Astoria.
Primary Wildlife: Provides wintering and resting areas for up to an estimated 1,000 tundra swans, up to 5,000 geese, and up to 30,000 ducks. Other species include shorebirds and bald eagles. Estuarine waters provide vital food resources for juvenile salmon as they pause to become acclimated to salt water before entering the Pacific Ocean.
Habitat: 8,313 acres of islands and sand bars in the Columbia River estuary. The refuge boundary encompasses 35,000 acres of mostly tidelands and open water.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, study, and photography. Waterfowl hunting (Oregon State regulations). Fishing for salmon, trout, sturgeon, and warm-water fish.
