Bike the Napa Valley

Bike the rolling hills of Napa (NVVA)

Though known to most only for its wine, Napa Valley also happens to be one of the best places to bike in Northern California. Smooth roads wind through grassy hills, forests of pine and oak, lush meadows, and, of course, ubiquitous vineyards.

True, you have to work a little to stay away from the hordes of wealthy tourists driving from winery to winery during the summer. To lose some of the crowds, head to Pope Valley, probably the least traveled and most scenic region in Napa; here you'll find numerous loops, both challenging and relaxed. For those who like to test their legs, Howell Mountain offers a formidable climb and some incredible scenery. And of course, along the way, you'll have the chance to drop by vineyards and sample some of the world's best wines. Just be sure to call ahead—some of the vineyards are by appointment only.
