Top Ten Central America Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures
To truly dive away from the crowds, take a two-hour boat trip from Ambergris Caye to Belize's most remote and unspoiled atoll. Its star attraction is the Blue Hole, a circular underwater depression more than 300 feet across and 400 feet deep. Talk about a trip back in time: Jacques Cousteau concluded in the mid-1970s that the Blue Hole is is a prehistoric sinkhole linked to a network of flooded caverns.
This is a rewarding dive location, as are the waters off nearby reefs and islands. Among the latter is Half Moon Caye, an important seabird colony where you can hike and observe a variety of wildlife. The 28-mile-long atoll is also an ideal location for sailing and sea kayaking. The only accommodations are the small, expensive Lighthouse Reef Resort on Northern Two Caye. Expect to pay $125 to $200 per person for a boat excursion to the atoll.
