Bike and Sip in Burgundy
By Patricia Ochs
In America, combining biking and sipping can land you in hot water with the law. But in Burgundy, taking these pleasures together is de rigueur. And there's no better place to start a week's bike tour of Burgundy than about 300 kilometers south of Paris in Beaune—a medieval town situated at the heart of the Côte d'Or vineyards. From there you can cruise the wine villages of Meursault, Vougeot, and Nuits-St-Georges and stop for samplings along the way. After a difficult climb over the Côte d'Or hills, you're rewarded with smooth coasting along pastures strewn with wildflowers. See Chateauneuf with its moat and drawbridge and head for the Burgundy Canal, the Cistercian abbey of Fontenay, and finally Vizelay, with its outstanding cathedral.
