Track Wildlife in a National Park

Defying the rainfall that eroded the surrounding arid pampa over the millennia, the rounded granite summits of Lihui Calel have created a variety of microhabitats that harbor an exceptional variety of wildlife, including pumas, rheas, foxes, and viscachas (relatives of the domestic chinchilla). These summits also harbored the Araucanian Indians, who left a record of their past in petroglyphs on the granite, and waged guerrilla warfare against the Argentine government in the 19th century. Though they barely exceed 1,900 feet, the summits yield panoramic views of endless flatlands and salt lakes that breed migratory birds, including flamingos. The nearest city is Santa Rosa, but there is camping at the park itself.
