Latin name: Erythronium americanum
Flower: The nodding, one-and-a-half-inch yellow flower has six petals and sepals that bend in a graceful, backward curve.
Average bloom season: March to May
Leaves and stems: The four- to six-inch elliptical leaves are mottled purple-brown and grow near the base of the six to nine-inch-high stem.
Range in AT states: Georgia to Maine
Most likely AT locations: Between Deep Gap and Wallace Gap in North Carolina; on a large percentage of hillsides in southwest and central Virginia; in low areas throughout Shenandoah National Park; Wyman and Hall Mountains in Maine.
