Latin name: Sanguinaria canadensis
Flower: The one- to two-inch blossom has eight or more white to pinkish petals around a cluster of many sepals.
Average bloom season: March to May
Leaves and stems: A single, five- to nine-lobed leaf first wraps around the stem, only to open after the flower has bloomed. The leaf persists into late summer.
Range in AT states: Georgia to Maine
Most likely AT locations: Between Springer Mountain and Neel's Gap in Georgia; on the mountains along the North Carolina/Tennessee border; on Tar Jacket Ridge and in Petit's Gap in central Virginia; throughout Shenandoah National Park.
