| Ski the Southern Hemisphere: Catch some serious Chilean air |
Does America's summertime air make you ache to break out the boards and schuss down slopes? Then Chile's the place to go. The Andean slopes reach their peak in August, and the altitude and stunning peaks make for some fantastic (if breathless) skiing. The most famous Chilean ski resort is Portillo, about two hours from Santiago, but three others are up the canyon of the Rio Mapocho, barely an hour from the capital, making it possible to stay cheaply in the city while spending the day on the slopes. There are also good ski resorts in the south at Termas de Chillan, Parque Nacional Villarrica (near the resort of Pucon), and Antillanca in Parque Nacional Puyehue (near the city of Osorno).
