Outdoor Key Largo
Key Largo Highlights
- The Yellow Bait House sells a wide selection of tackle and bait to anglers on their way to their boats. Recently, the Bait House shrewdly opened an on-site fresh fish market as well, for anglers who return from their boats without supper.
- Sight fishing the Keys Flats makes for a unique day—even for the experienced angler. Since the water is so transparent, and so shallow (between eight inches and five feet in depth) you can clearly see the fish you're hoping to hook. Be sure to bring along a pair of polarized sunglasses to reduce glare off the water's surface.
- Since motors will scare the fish in the Flats' shallows water, the best way to move your skiff along the Flats is to pole your boat forward—much like Huck Finn did.
- Barry Hoffman of Hoffman's Guide Service in Tavernier is a top Flats guide, and one of the nicest guys on the water.
- From late fall through mid spring, deep sea charter boats hunt sailfish off Key Largo and often return with 50 to 65 pound catches.
