Outdoor Anchorage

Anchorage Highlights

  • The 114-mile rail trip between Anchorage and Seward is one of the most beautiful train routes in the world. Consider an overnight in Seward before returning to Anchorage by rail.
  • For an unforgettably scenic day trip out of Anchorage you can’t go wrong with the Glacier Discovery Route. See glaciers, Turnagain Arm, rivers, and wildlife en route to Grandview; or, detrain at Spencer Glacier for an exciting rafting adventure before the turn around.
  • For a fun adventure, travel on the morning train through the impressive Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier. Spend the afternoon kayaking in Passage Canal or hike the short but dramatic Portage Pass trail before heading home on the evening train.
  • The Alaska Railroad provides a relaxing and scenic full day of travel to Denali National Park from Anchorage. Watch for moose, bears, and “the Mountain” from the generous picture windows while taking advantage of the food and beverage service.
  • Take the train from Anchorage to Denali Park, stay for two nights and, after a full day of play in the park, continue on to Fairbanks. Rent a vehicle and drive back down to Anchorage via the scenic Richardson and Glenn highways. Winter train travel between Anchorage and Fairbanks can provide wonderful opportunities for northern lights viewing in the remote territory.
