Spiders one should definitely avoid (listed by dangerousness): Sicarius spiders (deserts of South America and southern Africa); Whirring Tarantulas (northern Italy); Funnelweb spiders (Australia); Wandering Spiders (South and Central America); Widow Spiders (every continent except Antarctica); Violin Spiders (North and South America, Africa and Europe); Hobo spiders (Pacific Northwest U.S. and southeastern Europe).
There sure is a lot of misinformation about Spiders. The Widow Spider (of which there are five species in the U.S. alone) kill about two people a year out of roughly 3,000 bites. The Violin Spider (primarily the Brown Recluse species) kills about one person a year out of roughly 2,000 bites. Violin Spider envenomations can also cause serious non-fatal problems. The Hobo Spider occasionally kills people. Deaths from these spiders are not limited to children and the infirm; anyone can die.
