I grew up in southern Brazil and often saw large hairy tarantulas (4-6 in.), even in my home. It has always been my understanding that their bite could cause mild illness but was never life threatening. Friends reported rashes after contact with the "hairs" that they released. Reputable sources claim that there is no recorded death from a tarantula bite.
