Mount Massive Wilderness
Located in the San Isabel National Forest in Colorado.
The Mount Massive Wilderness encompasses over 30,000 acres of land just west of Leadville. Elevations
in the wilderness start at 10,000 feet and rise to 14,421 feet at the top of Colorado's second highest
mountain, Mount Massive. Despite its height, the top of Mount Massive can be attained by a moderate 6
mile hike (one way) from the trailhead at Halfmoon Creek. Hikers who make it to the top of Mount Massive
are greeted with panoramic views of the Arkansas Valley and other fourteeners in the Collegiate Peaks
Wilderness to the south. In total, the area contains about 20 miles of hiking trails.
